A Purple Green Smoothie!

Hey ho!  It's day 4 of the Green Smoothie Challenge!
How is it going for you?
For me, I am feeling better, enjoying the new flavors I am getting to try, and I don't know if you are noticing this, but my skin feels and looks better!  All those vitamins, minerals and free-radical fighting compounds, huh?
Today I would like to share a green smoothie that is actual a lovely shade of purple.  It also feels a lot more like a dessert than a health drink.  Alway a plus!

Purple Dessert Smoothie

1 banana, peeled

1/2 cup frozen blueberries
1 tbsp peanut butter, or the nut butter of your choice
4 oz (1/2 cup) chocolate milk of your choice
1 handful baby kales

Blend until smooth.  And it will be smooth, creamy and delicious!  Perfect if you tend to have a sweet tooth mid-day or in the evening.
If you haven't tried one yet, make this be the green smoothie you try!

As part of this awesome challenge Katherine has TWO giveaways going on!

Workout Wednesday V12: Jezz Dallas

To go along with the Green Smoothie Challenge this week, my Workout Wednesday guest is one of my co-hosts, Jezz Dallas!  She is a blogger and make-up artist that also is passionate about health and fitness so make sure to visit her blog for tips on feeling and looking your best, inside and out.  I really love what she has to say about balancing healthy foods with some favorites.

Name:  Jezz Dallas
Location: Virginia
Occupation:  Pro Blogger/Freelance Make-Up Artist
Find her: Facebook  Twitter  Bloglovin'

How long have you been working out regularly?
About 4 years.

What is your favorite type of cardio exercise?
I don't like cardio at all.  I do "enjoy" the rowing machine.

How often do you lift weights?
Every single time I workout!  It's not just my favorite thing to do, I believe it's essential as your natural fat burner.  You burn fat and tone your body at the same time!

Do you do any mind/body exercises like yoga or Pilates?
I am very much interested in Pilates, but have never tried it.  For me, working with weights is already relaxing and challenging at the same time.  I love listening to my music and just working out by myself.  Group classes are definitely not for me.

How do you stay motivated to get to the gym?
I look into a mirror!  I go into the gym for myself, because I feel the need to stay fit.  No pressure, just my very own natural motivation to prove to myself: "I can do it!"

What kind of diet do you follow?
I don't diet.  I do watch what I eat and try to stay in the healthy range.  If I do want to slim down I would stay away from carbs and sugar.  But, in the long run, it's just not possible to keep up with.

What are your top 3 tips for eating healthy?

  • Keep it simple: Fruits and water make my body happy!
  • Drink a lot of water, no soda ever.
  • Think about how much [food] you body really needs.  If I am not moving around a lot, I consume less.
What is your favorite type of workout clothing?
Crop pants and a tank!  Victoria's Secret has pants with a tiny pocket in the back for my MP3 player so I don't have to worry about where to put it.  I love it!

Do you take supplements daily?
I take fish oil everyday.  I also like to mix protein powder into my breakfast cereal or drink a small protein drink each day.  I use pre-exercise supplements and an actual protein shake only on days I actually work out.  For more supplement tips from Jezz go here.

When you get busy, how do you squeeze in a workout?
I have to admit, sometimes I am lazy and skip the gym.  But that only makes me more motivated to get back into it the next day!

Do you ever give yourself a cheat meal or cheat day?
Absolutely.  But, since I don't diet per se, I don't have to "cheat."  I don't restrict myself from eating a piece of chocolate or slice of pizza.  I just try to find a healthy balance!

Any food that you never eat?
I love food.  I have yet to find a type of food I would never eat!  And even if it has the most calories, a tiny bite isn't going to kill me.  That's why I workout!

What is a typical workout like for you?
I usually go into the gym with a plan.  One day arms (shoulders/triceps), abs and legs or abs and back another day.  I do mainly lifts ranging from 3-25 pounds.  You don't need heavy weights to get results.
My newest obsession is to get a tight, lifted butt with:  squats!  It's tough at first but the results come fast if you keep with it.  Go here for more sample workouts and gym details!

Thanks for sharing with us, Jezz!  I am definitely motivated to go lift weights now!

Sunday Social + Green Smoothie Recipe!

Happy Sunday!
I can't believe it is already Sunday and we are nearly to the end of April.  Time has been flying so far in 2013.

Are you taking the Green Smoothie Challenge?  It starts tomorrow and all you have to do is sign up here and add a green smoothie or juice to your day for the next week.

I have spent the last couple of weeks trying out recipes and I can tell you that on days when I have green juice I feel SO much better.  It really is a burst of energy and even my skin feels better.
Starting tomorrow and throughout the week I will be posting recipes along with Kat, Jezz, Kristine, Hope, and Ashlee.

There will be lots of other fun posts to go along with the challenge so stay tuned!

Sunday Social

Now, onto Sunday Social.

1.  What is your shopping weakness?
Oh, man. What isn't?  A great purse.  Cute shoes.  A casual dress that I can wear everyday.  And lets not forget make-up and body products.  I am a shopaholic and there is no way to hide it!

2.  What is your food weakness?
Pizza and sweets.  I can't say no to either.

3.  What is your go to movie to watch when nothing is on?
Spanglish, Good Will Hunting, and Conversations With Other Women are all movies that I can watch again and again.  Oh!  And lets not forget the pick-me-up movies Steel Magnolia's and Beaches.

4.  What is your go-to breakfast food?
A banana sprinkled with cinnamon with a dollop of peanut butter.  I feel best when this is how I start my day.

5.  Do you drink coffee?  If so, how do you take it?
Hells to the yes I drink coffee!  Daily I take it black, but I do enjoy a 2% latte for a treat and I have been known to add cream if I am at brunch.

Now it's your turn!  Answers the questions, grab the button and link up!
Not a blogger?  No problem!  I still would love to hear your answers, so leave them in the comment section below.

Enjoy your Sunday!

Green Smoothie Challenge

Katherine of the Real Food Runner Blog just sent me a very fun invitation.  She is running a Back to School Green Smoothie Challenge.  She had me at "green smoothie"!
It is an easy challenge to do.  Simply have one green smoothie each day, September 3-10, 2012.
I wanted to share this as soon as I got her email because I wanted to give all of you a chance to make your grocery lists.
To officially join the challenge head on over to Katherine's blog and comment on her post about the challenge.  She will be posting green smoothie recipes during the week and I am going to, also!
To get started and to get you excited about the challenge here is a favorite green smoothie recipe of mine:

8 oz coconut water
1 banana, sliced
1-2 handfuls of kale
A dash of local honey
A handful of ice cubes

Place all ingredients in a blender and blend using the "smoothie" setting until thoroughly combined.

If you want to do the challenge but you aren't big on buying bunches of produce or maybe you don't have the time to blend, you can still participate.  Nearly all grocery stores have bottled green smoothies, like Naked or Bolthouse Farms.  Each bottle contains 2 servings so you would only need to buy a few bottles to get through the challenge.

Make sure you head over to http://therealfoodrunner.blogspot.com/2012/08/back-to-school-green-smoothie-challenge.html to let Katherine know you will be participating and please comment below as well...I want to know who's in!

If you are an Instagram addict like me lets go ahead and IG it up with #greensmoothiechallenge

Cheers!
