15 Strange Days

Three weeks ago I felt miserable.
On a Thursday I went for a great, sun-filled 4 mile run.  That evening I had a sore throat, like I had swallowed sand paper.  By Friday morning I also was achy, runny nose, sinus pain...the works.  By the time Sunday rolled around I was also coughing.  A deep, chesty cough.  I napped and woke up feeling even worse, so I went to urgent care, expecting an upper respiratory infection or something along those lines.
The doctor said it was just really bad allergies and prescribed me a heavy-duty nasal spray and 2 weeks on steroids.  Predisone.  I wasn't very excited about that.  I hate taking medication and I usually feel a difference in my body when I take just about anything.  Add to that all of the horror stories of being on steroids and I was inclined to say no.  But, if I have learned nothing else in the last few years, it is that I have to at least try to be a good patient.  So, I filled the Rx and on Monday April 8 began a strong dose of Predisone that would then slowly taper over 15 days.
I was expecting an energy boost.  When I took a 5-day round at the time I had my wisdom teeth removed I remember having so much energy post-surgery that I wrote an entire outline for a book while recovering in bed.
Rather than getting a boost in energy, I felt tired.  And the second day I had horrible gas pains.  Even further into the 15 days I began to feel big.  The doctor had warned me that I could feel bloated, and did I ever!  Plus my face got puffy and held sleep lines well into the afternoon.
Jeans that were loose suddenly were tight.
I had no energy/desire to workout, but once I would start I was able to power through at an almost robot-like state/pace.
One side-effect is an increase in sweating, and while I didn't experience it all day long, when I was doing cardio I would begin to sweat profusely about 10 minutes in.  Not too bad, I just looked at it like detox :)
Every evening I get a nauseous feeling along with extreme fatigue.  Just like with working out, though, I have been able to power through it if I choose to.
Increased appetite is another side effect, and it hasn't been too extreme, except at night.  I think I ate ice cream every single night.  And on Friday I put away two extra slices of pizza.
The worst part was feeling so big, and looking that way, too.  I asked JF if I looked different and he said not at all.  Turns out, he was either lying or not listening, because today, on my second to last day of treatment, he told me that in the middle, at my highest dosage time, that I looked hulky.  Bulky.  Stocky.
And that is what was weird.  I didn't look or feel flabby, just solid.
I have already begun to thin out a bit.  I had told myself I wasn't going to get on the scale during these 15 days.  Of course I have.  To a number that is 8-10 pounds over normal!  Yikes.  But I have been skimming some message boards and have read that most people lose the added weight, mostly water weight, very quickly.
This has been a very strange 2 week period.  I do feel better than 2 weeks ago, although my cough is starting to come back.  Hopefully this was all worth the changes in my body and mood.
I know that there are many people that have to take steroids and so many other medications that change their weight and so much more for an ongoing period of time.  This has definitely been an eye-opening experience and I hope to use what I have learned to help when students are faced with such issues.

***update***
I wrote the above post on April 21.  I am writing this April 29, 3 weeks after beginning the Prednisone, and 1 week after ending it.  When my mom heard I was taking a steroid she mentioned that she felt like all it did was mask any symptoms that would only come back.  She may faint when she reads this, but my mom was right!  The last few days my chest is heavy, I am coughing like crazy and nearly have no voice :/  I don't think I will ever take steroids for acute seasonal allergies again.  If I have to for an allergic reaction or something, I will.  But this has not been a success in my book.

Since we are on the subject of allergies, I will use this as an opportunity to share some photos of the beautiful, allergy-inducing plains of Missouri:

Have you ever had to take steroids for medical reasons?
How did you feel?
Does taking medicine make you feel foggy/icky/different in any way?
Did you notice that I was looking puffy the last two weeks but, just like JF, decline comment? ;)

I have a button!

Wow. Just wow. It has taken me two attempts over the last month, both lasting hours, to finally get this whole button thing right. Please, just take a moment, glance to the right, look at the "Grab My Button" widget and admire its beauty. Ahhhhh... Doesn't that feel nice. It is no secret that I am not a computer wizard, but I can usually do okay by using tutorials and such. For some reason this button thing eluded me.

For those of you interested it was finally this tutorial that worked magic for me.  This blog now has my undevoted love and if I could hug a blog, this would be the one!

Let's take a closer look:

Eeek!  Gorgeous!  I would say it is nearly as thrilling as looking at my boys baby pictures.
Take that HTML!  I conquered you.
For today, that is.

Now, if you are a blogger, c'mon!  Grab my button!

Thanks for the challenge!

Thanks to Katherine for organizing the Green Smoothie Challenge and for asking me to co-host.
It was such a fun week of getting to know new people, trying out new recipes, and really thinking about the foods I put in my body.  I have a month's worth of smoothie recipes now that I can't wait to try out!
Thanks also to my super-friendly and fun co-hosts:
Kristine // Ashlee // Jezz // Hope
I noticed many friends posting on Instagram, Twitter, and even blogging right along with the challenge.
A special shout out to my bestest Eva for sharing her photos!
Strawberries, blueberries and spinach make for a purply-pink smoothie that is without a doubt GREEN!

Thanks to my hubsy-bubsy baby boo JF for sharing his recipe yesterday and putting up with photo shoots and me stealing his produce for my smoothies :)

Go check out Elle's blog!
She has a beautiful rainbow smoothie today and yesterday she posted a savory smoothie.  I had toyed around with creating a savory smoothie but wasn't brave enough to try.  I am so glad Elle posted this recipe.  I think it will be perfect for a hot summer day when a meal just is too much to fathom.

I hope that you have enjoyed the last week as much as I have!

Green Smoothie Challenge - Day 7

Wow!  I can't believe it is already the end of the Green Smoothie Challenge!
Don't worry, though, there will be one final post AND a link-up tomorrow, so there is still plenty of fun to be had :)

Today's recipe comes from no other than my JF.
He has been drinking a giant green drink/smoothie for a little over a month now. While I would like to say that he was inspired by me, it was actually good old Joe Rogan that got him to drink a blender full of green stuff.  As much as I am not UFC and especially Joe Rogan fan, his podcast and health tips seem to be fairly sound.  At least the info that gets passed on to me.  So, ladies He says that he feels refreshed and clean and he has noticed that his tension headaches have gone away.

JF's Green Smoothie inspired by Joe Rogan
1 cucumber
1 pear
2-3 big, man-sized handfuls of baby kales
4 celery stalks
Quarter-sized piece of fresh ginger
8 ounces cold water
Blend until smooth.  This is a pulpy drink.

Saturday morning, sharing smoothie time.  I made Strawberry Kale juice.

Make sure you check back tomorrow for our final Green Smoothie Link up!

Drink your oatmeal!

It's Friday and Day 5 of the Green Smoothie Challenge!  Are you loving it so far?

From mom telling you that oatmeal is a good breakfast because it "sticks to your ribs" to the many studies that, thanks to soluable fiber, oatmeal can help lower cholesterol, there are many reasons to start the day with a bowl of oatmeal.  But maybe you are low on time or oatmeal just isn't your thing.
The smoothie I am sharing today not only has greens but oatmeal, too!

My recipe for Overnight Steel Cut Oatmeal goes great in this smoothie :)

Oatmeal Smoothie
1/2 cup Overnight Oats
8 strawberries
1/2 cup almond milk, or milk of your choice
1-2 handfuls spinach
1 tbsp sunflower seed butter or nut butter

Blend all of the ingredients until smooth, adding more milk to thin to your desired consistency.
For best results use frozen strawberries.

I really liked the flavor of this one and, thanks to the oats and sun butter I was not hungry until lunch.

Got a smoothie recipe you want to share?  Join today's link-up!

There is still time to enter to win Honey Stinger Lemon Waffles and Organic Energy Gels...head here to enter!

Honey Stinger Review + GIVEAWAY

The first time I tried a Honey Stinger product it was as a free sample at my local health food market.  It was their Energy Chews and, I have to admit, I was expecting a vitamin-y/dry taste like some other energy products out there.  I was pleasantly surprised by the natural taste and the great texture.  That got me to read more about the product and it turns out Honey Stinger has many organic options, natural options and uses natural sweeteners like organic tapioca and honey.

That free sample experience led to todays review and giveaway!

Honey Stinger sent me a generous case of Lemon Waffles, Energy Bars and Energy Gels.
They arrived at a perfect time, the day before my Piloxing training.  Teacher trainings are a true test of my fitness level.  I love attending trainings, but with a day that lasts 9+ hours and typically includes no less than half of that time being spent actually working out my body, I have learned to pack lots of healthy snacks that will keep me going.
So, I packed a Blueberry Buzz bar and a few Organic Lemon Stinger Waffles--one for me and enough to share with my friends in the training.
The Blueberry Buzz bar tastes like real blueberries!  And, again, the texture and taste is great.
As for the Lemon Stinger Waffles...I feel like I could write an entire post about them!  One post about them on Instagram and I had tons of comments from followers attesting to the absolute ymminess of them.
Imagine a waffle cone and creamy lemon filling all wrapped in a convienient package.  One friend that I shared with at the training said that she normally doesn't like lemon but the waffle had such a smooth, natural taste that she loved it.
While it was great for an energy sustaining snack I can also see it being a healthy alternative any day to silence my sweet tooth.

A typical work day for me is not very much more relaxed than a teacher training day.  I am on my feet spotting, cycling, demo-ing and stretching for anywhere from 4-7 hours.  I need lots of protein but in small portions.  I tried the Caffienated Dark Chocolate Mocha Cherry Protein Bar on one of my busiest teaching days.  My plan was to eat half a bar mid-day and save the other half for after my shift.  My plan was quickly foiled when I had my first bite.  I swear, in a blind taste test, you would think this was a candy bar!  With ingredients like organic honey, evaporated cane juice and real chocolate, yes, it is more sweet treat than health food, but it's a great source of energy (it has coffee IN the bar) and a perfect way to keep an active body energized.  10 grams of protein provide fuel to keep you going. Pack it for your next bike ride or hike.

Now on to the Energy Gels.  I am not an expert on gels.  My longest distance as a run is right around 7 miles.  I have stayed away from gels and goo in the past because I was uneasy about the ingredients.  And then came Honey Stinger.  Their gels are organic which means that I can read the ingredients and see words I know and want to put in my body.  And I just love any and all things honey!  I tried Fruit Smoothie, Vanilla and Acai Pomegranate.  All three are tasty, but Fruit Smoothie is my favorite.  It has a dessert-like feel to power me through my workout.
I also enlisted some help from my marathon-running, name-sharing friend Sally. She runs marathons several times each year and half marathons just for fun, so you know she knows her stuff when it comes to energy gels. Her thoughts:

"My favorite of the 3 stingers was the vanilla. I felt like they gave me the boost I need to push through
my workout. I loved that they are organic!"

And now it's your turn to try Honey Stinger!  Enter to win below.  The drawing ends April 28.  Good luck!

Workout Wednesday V12: Jezz Dallas

To go along with the Green Smoothie Challenge this week, my Workout Wednesday guest is one of my co-hosts, Jezz Dallas!  She is a blogger and make-up artist that also is passionate about health and fitness so make sure to visit her blog for tips on feeling and looking your best, inside and out.  I really love what she has to say about balancing healthy foods with some favorites.

Name:  Jezz Dallas
Location: Virginia
Occupation:  Pro Blogger/Freelance Make-Up Artist
Find her: Facebook  Twitter  Bloglovin'

How long have you been working out regularly?
About 4 years.

What is your favorite type of cardio exercise?
I don't like cardio at all.  I do "enjoy" the rowing machine.

How often do you lift weights?
Every single time I workout!  It's not just my favorite thing to do, I believe it's essential as your natural fat burner.  You burn fat and tone your body at the same time!

Do you do any mind/body exercises like yoga or Pilates?
I am very much interested in Pilates, but have never tried it.  For me, working with weights is already relaxing and challenging at the same time.  I love listening to my music and just working out by myself.  Group classes are definitely not for me.

How do you stay motivated to get to the gym?
I look into a mirror!  I go into the gym for myself, because I feel the need to stay fit.  No pressure, just my very own natural motivation to prove to myself: "I can do it!"

What kind of diet do you follow?
I don't diet.  I do watch what I eat and try to stay in the healthy range.  If I do want to slim down I would stay away from carbs and sugar.  But, in the long run, it's just not possible to keep up with.

What are your top 3 tips for eating healthy?

  • Keep it simple: Fruits and water make my body happy!
  • Drink a lot of water, no soda ever.
  • Think about how much [food] you body really needs.  If I am not moving around a lot, I consume less.
What is your favorite type of workout clothing?
Crop pants and a tank!  Victoria's Secret has pants with a tiny pocket in the back for my MP3 player so I don't have to worry about where to put it.  I love it!

Do you take supplements daily?
I take fish oil everyday.  I also like to mix protein powder into my breakfast cereal or drink a small protein drink each day.  I use pre-exercise supplements and an actual protein shake only on days I actually work out.  For more supplement tips from Jezz go here.

When you get busy, how do you squeeze in a workout?
I have to admit, sometimes I am lazy and skip the gym.  But that only makes me more motivated to get back into it the next day!

Do you ever give yourself a cheat meal or cheat day?
Absolutely.  But, since I don't diet per se, I don't have to "cheat."  I don't restrict myself from eating a piece of chocolate or slice of pizza.  I just try to find a healthy balance!

Any food that you never eat?
I love food.  I have yet to find a type of food I would never eat!  And even if it has the most calories, a tiny bite isn't going to kill me.  That's why I workout!

What is a typical workout like for you?
I usually go into the gym with a plan.  One day arms (shoulders/triceps), abs and legs or abs and back another day.  I do mainly lifts ranging from 3-25 pounds.  You don't need heavy weights to get results.
My newest obsession is to get a tight, lifted butt with:  squats!  It's tough at first but the results come fast if you keep with it.  Go here for more sample workouts and gym details!

Thanks for sharing with us, Jezz!  I am definitely motivated to go lift weights now!

If you are taking part in the Green Smoothie Challenge don't forget that today is link-up day!
Add your post to the link-up here and check out my recipe for Pineapple Kale Cucumber Juice!

Green Smoothie Challenge Link-Up + Pineapple Cucumber Kale Juice

Green Smoothie Challenge Day 3!  And today is a LINK-UP, so if you are taking part in the challenge make sure to blog about it and join the link-up party!

Today I will be sharing a juice drink.  How does this differ from a smoothie?  When I think smoothie I think creamy, whether from dairy or another milk option.  For a juice drink, the base is water or just the liquid from the fruits and veggies.  It's lighter and could be used in between meals as a snack or as part of a juice fast.
I like to make a juice-water blend for after a workout.  They are pulpy and you will really feel like you are drinking produce, but you will feel amazing shortly after sipping!  I typically get an energy boost and an overall feeling of wellness after drinking juice.  How about you?

Pineapple Kale Cucumber Juice

3/4 cup pineapple
1 small cucumber or half of a large cucumber
1 bunch of kale
1/2 cup chilled green tea
1/2 cup cold water

Combine all ingredients in a blender.  There will be pulp from the veggies and fruit.  If you are not a pulp fan make sure to use a strainer.

Drink up!

Don't forget to check in with Katherine, Jezz, Kristine, Ashlee and Hope to see their amazing recipes for green smoothies!

Did I really just eat that?!

I used to despise counting calories.  I would put pen to paper after each meal or snack and it would drive me to binge eat.  Seriously.  Too much thinking about calories and what I was consuming would stress me out.  But now I have MyFitnessPal and I pretty much love it.
It is fun, at the end of the day, to enter what I have eaten and what workouts I have completed.  It is a great way to keep tabs on how much I am consuming and if I am getting enough calories on days when I teach a lot.
So what's the drawback?  Well...it's right there.  In front of my face.  The handful of M&M's.  The cookie that I popped in my mouth while cooking dinner.  And the numbers don't lie.
It also has been VERY shocking to see how many calories and fat are in restaurant items.  Hidden fillers, sodium and cooking products really add up.

I had one of those shocking moments on Sunday.

Before I begin, I would like to ask you to suspend all judgement on the food, and the name of the food, that I chose.  Take it easy on me, okay? :)

Photo from Perkinsrestaurants.com

We had a very busy weekend so when Sunday morning rolled around we headed to Perkins for brunch.  I ordered the Country Cookin' Benedict.
I am a huge fan of Eggs Benedict and this menu item is English Muffins topped with sausage patties, cheese crumbles, gravy (duh!) tomatoes (for health) and cheese crumbles.  Add a side of country potatoes to make it a meal.  I did choose fresh fruit instead of a Mammoth Muffin.  *pat on the back*
Okay.  So I knew I wasn't ordering health food.  Anything that used a dropped G in the menu name is bound to be packed with fat and calories.  However, it wasn't until I had entered it into MyFitnessPal that I really felt the pounds packing on.

1,561 calories
91 grams of fat

EXCUSE ME?!  That is more calories than I typically take in, after exercise, in a whole day.  And the fat?  That is probably about 3 days worth for me!  Turns out it is under the "Over The Top Specialties" section, so, I mean...I really should have known.

I felt horrible.  Not just after the meal, which I did have a food hangover from until about 7:00 that evening.  But for not being more aware of what I was eating.  I am a Pilates instructor.  A personal trainer.  A fitness blogger.  I should not be eating things smothered in gravy, right?

But.
It was good.
And I don't eat like that every day or even every week or month.

So what is the moral of this tale?
It is horrendous that foods like this exist.  If I wanted a big breakfast, I should have made it myself for less calories and fat and definitely less chemicals.  But it is life.  And we all have moments when we indulge, right?  Will I order that again?  Maybe.  Next year.  Did I let it ruin my week?  No way!
Monday I jumped right back into a banana and peanut butter for breakfast, a green smoothie for lunch and as many veggies as I could eat.

So.  Indulge.  Occasionally.  One meal won't make you fat.  But be aware of what you are eating and how often you are taking in the bad vs. the good.  And make sure you will really enjoy what you are indulging in so that you feel satisfied instead of just wanting more.

Have you ever ordered something and searched it later, only to find out it was a calorie monster?

Do you allow yourself to order gravy covered breakfasts?

Do you count calories?  Do you use an app for it?

It's Day 2 of the Green Smoothie Challenge!  How are you doing?
Today I had one of my favorites:

1 bunch kale
1 bunch spinach
4 strawberries
8-10 grapes
1 cup COLD water
Blend until smooth for a refreshing, energizing drink!

Sunday Social

Now, onto Sunday Social.

1.  What is your shopping weakness?
Oh, man. What isn't?  A great purse.  Cute shoes.  A casual dress that I can wear everyday.  And lets not forget make-up and body products.  I am a shopaholic and there is no way to hide it!

2.  What is your food weakness?
Pizza and sweets.  I can't say no to either.

3.  What is your go to movie to watch when nothing is on?
Spanglish, Good Will Hunting, and Conversations With Other Women are all movies that I can watch again and again.  Oh!  And lets not forget the pick-me-up movies Steel Magnolia's and Beaches.

A banana sprinkled with cinnamon with a dollop of peanut butter.  I feel best when this is how I start my day.

5.  Do you drink coffee?  If so, how do you take it?
Hells to the yes I drink coffee!  Daily I take it black, but I do enjoy a 2% latte for a treat and I have been known to add cream if I am at brunch.
